Local youth charity The Door is on the look out for new volunteer mentors to support young people in and around Cam and Dursley. The Door which also runs Youth Clubs at The Vibe in Dursley and Cam Youth and Community Centre is particularly keen to hear from local people who can spare an hour a week to listen and guide a young person. Full training is given as well as ongoing support.
Mentoring Team Leader Debbie Camm says “We have a long list of young people in Cam and Dursley waiting to be matched with a mentor but not enough trained volunteers to meet demand. We are hoping that by running a volunteer training course in Dursley town centre, that it will be more accessible for local people to take part.”
One young person said about mentoring: “Talking to my mentor has really helped me. It’s nice knowing that I have somebody there to talk to and to really help me.”
Training starts in June at The Vibe on Parsonage St, Dursley. There are 6 sessions on Monday evenings lasting between 2 and 3 hours.
One volunteer said: “Mentoring is so enjoyable and very rewarding, I’m really glad I made the decision to become a mentor”
Potential volunteers don’t need any prior experience, just a willingness to learn and the ability to commit to an hour or two once a week for an initial 6 months. Applicants should be 18 years or older at the start of June 2024, be able to provide two references and complete a DBS check.
