“A nurturing and welcoming school”

Blue Coat CofE School in Wotton-under-Edge was visited in March 2023. Ofsted graded the school as follows:

The quality of education: Good
Behaviour and attitudes: Outstanding
Personal development: Outstanding
Leadership and management: Outstanding
Early years provision: Outstanding

These combined gave an overall effectiveness grade of Good. With only 4% of schools being rated as Outstanding nationally, the report shows Blue Coat Primary to be a very high performing school.

Blue Coat is a special place where pupils and staff flourish in a caring and supportive environment. The feedback demonstrates the value we place upon the learning and enrichment of our children as well as our links with the wider school community.

Three inspectors spent two days at the 315-pupil school that serves Wotton and the surrounding areas. They commented that the school has an “ambitious and broad curriculum” and that â€œleaders and Governors strive for excellence.”

The teaching of reading was a focus during the inspection and the reports states “A passion for reading is at the heart of the curriculum” and that the children “experience a wealth of books and stories” during their time at the school.

The glowing report goes on to say “Pupils personal development is exceptionally well supported”, commenting on the curriculum enrichment activities that take place.

The report also praises the Outstanding Early Years provision, saying that children in the first year of school “experience lots of high quality interactions” and that they “behave with motivation and resilience.”

Teachers from Blue Coat School expressed:

“We were delighted that the exceptional provision at Blue Coat was recognised as Outstanding in nearly all of the Ofsted categories. This is as a result of the hard work and dedication of staff, the significant input of parents with whom the school works with closely, as well as the individual talents and personalities of our wonderful children.”

“I feel so fortune to be part of an inspirational team where everyone goes out of their way to support and encourage each other.”

“How wonderful that Ofsted has recognised the dedication and commitment of the Blue Coat team!”

Headteacher Glyn Jones sums up the inspection by saying:

“An Ofsted report can never encapsulate all of the rich experiences that happen at any school. However, we were delighted that the exceptional provision at Blue Coat was recognised as Outstanding in nearly all of the Ofsted categories. This is as a result of the hard work and dedication of staff, the significant input of parents with whom the school works with closely, as well as the individual talents and personalities of our wonderful children.”
