In a time when green spaces are vanishing under concrete, Wotton-under-Edge has achieved something extraordinary. Brown’s Piece – 11 acres of wild, historic land nestled in a corner between Clarence Road, Water Lane and Symn Lane – has officially been purchased by the Wotton Community Land Trust Ltd (WCLT). This isn’t just a transaction; it’s a triumph of community spirit, environmental stewardship, and local pride.
A Landscape Rich in Memory Brown’s Piece, also known as Hack Hill, is more than a patch of pasture. It’s a living archive of Wotton’s past. Locals remember it as a mill site, a lido, a scrapyard, and a playground. Generations have wandered its footpaths, climbed its terraced slopes, and watched swifts dart through its meadows. It’s a place where nature and nostalgia intertwine. But in recent years, the land faced an uncertain future. Overgrown paths, invasive species like Japanese knotweed, and the looming threat of development cast a shadow over its fate. The idea that this beloved space could become just another housing site sparked concern – and action.
A Community Rallies   For years, Brown’s Piece stood quietly at the edge of town – overgrown and uncertain. But when whispers began to circulate, one question rang louder than the rest: “Is it going to be bought by a developer?” It wasn’t just idle speculation – it was a fear that echoed through Wotton’s streets, sparking urgency and galvanizing action. The idea that this beloved green space could be lost to bricks and mortar stirred something deep in the community. In response, the Wotton Community Land Trust (WCLT) stepped forward. Led by Chair Dom Driver and supported by passionate locals, the Trust launched a campaign not just to protect the land, but to reclaim it. Residents pledged funds, businesses lent their support, and one even offered an interest-free loan. This wasn’t just about land – it was about legacy.
