Sharing is Caring

People of all abilities and mobilities are invited to take part in The Lock Challenge, a fully accessible day to encourage people to enjoy canals in the Stroud district.

Organised by Cotswold Canals Connected, this year’s challenge offers participants three routes to choose from: a 5km fully accessible route, a 10km walking route and a team relay running route.

Funds raised will be donated to two canal-based community groups, SPiCE, the Stonehouse Ship Inn Community Enterprise and Cotswold Boatmobility.

5km fully accessible route
Journey from Ebley Mill to Stonehouse and back along a wide, smooth section of the Thames and Severn Canal towpath. This route is suitable for disability trikes, wheelchairs, and people with mobility issues.

Cost: free-of-charge, but participants must register in advance.

10km gentle walking route
Follow a map that will guide you along a gentle route from Ebley Mill to Brimscombe Mill and back, answering quiz questions along the route. When you reach Brimscombe Mill there will be live music, and food and drink to buy from The Long Table to sustain you on your return to Ebley Mill.

Cost: £5 for adults, £2 for children.

5x5km team relay run
Gather a team of five who will each run a 5km leg along the Stroudwater and Thames & Severn Canals. By the end of the event your team will have completed 25k.

Cost: £75 per team.

“This is a brilliant way for everyone to get active and enjoy our wonderful canals, whatever their level of ability,” said Sarah Burgess, Cotswold Canals Connected Community Engagement Manager.

“Studies show that spending time near water such as canal towpaths can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

“The Lock Challenge is designed so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of spending time along our beautiful canals, while enjoying the company of others.”

Each route starts and ends at Ebley Mill, Stroud District Council’s headquarters. There will be parking and toilets at Ebley Mill, Brimscombe Mill and The Daneway (on the 5x5km relay route), water refill stations and refreshments to buy at Ebley Mill and Brimscombe Mill.
