Relative Robustness. This is a term I coined a few years ago to explain why we need to exercise and eat well, and it applies to all of our long-term health and also our immediate well-being as we enter cold & flu season.
As long as we are more robust than what is required from our immediate environment, occupational and daily needs then we are protected from the vicissitudes of life. No-one can prepare for a traumatic injury, but we can reduce our risk of accidents and illnesses.
Start by boosting your immune system. Not through supplements but with a good healthy diet including lots of vegetables. Try to get more of your proteins from plants, nuts, and seeds such as pumpkins seeds and quinoa and try cutting alcohol and meat out for 2-3 days a week.
Slips, trips, and falls increase this time of year – this won’t change but how do we avoid an injury from such an event? Practice toe stands and lunges – every day, perhaps while waiting for the kettle to boil. This is our in-built mechanism for stopping a trip becoming a fall, but we need to practice as get older.
But why do more exercise? We are busy people. Sure. But if the most active thing you do is walk to the shops, then this will eventually be the most you can do, without injury that is.
Here at Wotton Health, we love meeting everyone and helping people, but we would rather you avoided paying us a visit by improving your own relative robustness. See you the hill.
