On 18th May its International Museum Day and what better way to pay homage than to showcase our very own Museum in the Park.
The theme for this year is a focus on museums’ sustainability and wellbeing topics that are close to the Museum in the Parks own initiatives.
Museum in the Park, managed by Stroud District Council in collaboration with the Stroud District (Cowle) Museum Trust, is situated in a Grade II listed 17th Century former wool merchants house. The museum tells the extraordinary and diverse history of Stroud district and has over 4,000 objects and artefacts on display from dinosaur bones to one of the worlds first lawnmowers.
The free-of-charge museum also has a walled garden which was brought back to life after a period of neglect and now offers a peaceful respite for anyone who visits. There is also an emphasis on inclusivity there is something for everyone to enjoy from spectacular flowers to garden trails.
Cllr Beki Aldam, vice chair of Community Services & Licensing Committee said: “Its a good opportunity to recognise the important and intrinsic value that Museum in the Park plays on International Museum Day. It is one of Stroud districts finest attractions artefacts galore, pear blossom in wild meadows, local stories and exhibitions to discover.
“Channelling one of this years themes of climate action, its fantastic news that the museum has recently been part of a successful bid to secure vital funding that will enable it to replace aging boilers with sustainable air source heat pumps.â€
She added:
“One of the priorities in our Council Plan is investing in Leisure and Culture Services to ensure everyone has access to good quality leisure opportunities that meet their needs. The museum plays an important role in providing a safe space to explore and discover on your own or with friends and family.â€
International Museum Day hopes to promote museums as places of wellbeing, sustainability, and community. Museums play a huge role in the delivery of vital education and have a positive impact for communities who can share in their history. The day supports a set of goals from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2023, and these will focus on Global Health and Wellbeing, Climate Action and Life on Land.
